Cod Army Report: Burton 0 Fleetwood 1
26/5/14 - 3:00pm
Fleetwood's incredible rise through the League's continued on Monday with a 1-0 win over Burton at Wembley in the League 2 Play Off Final to secure our place in League 1 next season.
An amazing sixth promotion in ten years keeps the unbelievable journey that we're on going, who knows just where this will end!
David Ball, twice in the matter of minutes, almost had us into an early lead.
Firstly he picked up what was an attempted Iain Hume effort to turn and shot but Burton goalkeeper Dean Lyness saved well. Ball caused problems from that corner too, getting his head to the ball but the Burton defence cleared the danger.
Two penalty appeals, again within very quick succession of each other, were called for but neither given.
In all honesty the challenge by Robbie Weir on Matty Blair and then Shane Cansdell-Sherriff's on Ball weren't penalties in either case with the referee correct to wave both of these appeals away.
Burton started to test us a little more with Lee Bell forcing Chris Maxwell into his first meaningful effort from all of 25 yards but Maxwell, seeking 'one more cleansheet', kept himself on target to achieve that.
Half Time: Burton 0 Fleetwood 0
For once, as we hadn't really seen this at all during our Play Off bid, Mark Roberts and Nathan Pond got caught at the back and this allowed Billy Kee to get onto the end of a long ball but the Burton striker wasted this opportunity as he fired over.
The Burton threat grew as the second half went on with them almost breakthrough through.
Ahead of the game I said that Burton had some players capable of offering great delivery, one of these players is Chris Hussey with one of his corners causing problems but luckily for us Cansdell-Sherriff headed across the six yard box and away from danger.
Then came the latest moment that will go down in Cod Army history, we scored.
Antoni Sarcevic, from all of 30 yards plus, tried a speculative effort from a freekick that Lyness should have quite comfortably taken but the Burton goalkeeper but his mistake allowed the ball to fly passed him and into the net.
Burton had to press now, they threw plenty of men forward but that defence stood firm once again with a third successive cleansheet in the Play Offs making sure we saw the game out and secured our promotion.
Full Time: Burton 0 Fleetwood 1
I feel sorry for Lyness as it was a horrible mistake to cost his side promotion but it made sure that we went up and over the course of the season, let alone the Play Offs themselves, we deserve to be the fourth side getting out on League 2.
Graham Alexander had continued the great work started by them before him.
I'll not be expecting it but I wonder if a seventh promotion could be celebrated next season! Lets just enjoy this one for now though.
