Cod Army Report: Fleetwood 1 Port Vale 0
4/10/14 - 3:00pm
Fleetwood ended a baron spell of a month without a win by ending the run of a resurgent Port Vale side at Highbury on Saturday.
Defensively we were tight again but our usual problems of scoring were on display, a 0-0 draw was on until a penalty 10 minutes from time brought us a much needed 1-0 win.
Chris Maxwell has been a stalwart in The Cod Amy goal since forcing his way in last season but he almost allowed a 20 yard effort from Mark Marshall to slip his grasp, he spilled the drive but was able to recover before it crossed the line.
Port Vale, on top in the first half, had a better chance that the prolific Tom Pope would usually take but Gareth Evans was spared a concession of possession as the striker headed over.
Chris Neal, the Port Vale goalkeeper, was a virtual bystander as we failed to threatened.
With half time approaching Port Vale suddenly found themselves down to 10 men when Kevin Johnson showed Jordan Slew a straight red card for a raised arm, not that there seemed much in it, to the face of Stephen Jordan.

They might have had 10 men but it didn't make much difference to Port Vale as they continued to look the more threatening side at the start of the second half with Pope denied a goal by the crossbar.
Sensing a change was needed Graham Alexander called for fresh blood.
Youngster Nick Haughton one of those brought on and his impact was almost instant as he set up Stephen Dobbie but his effort went over via a deflection.
The game was shifting in our favour and more chances were coming, Dobbie at the heart of it but twice denied by Neal.
As time ran out, and Port Vale's 10 men tired, another of Alexander's substitutes David Ball was brought down by Ryan McGivern as he burst into the area to see us awarded a penalty with 10 minutes left.
Dobbie wasn't being denied this time as he smashed passed Neal to end our baron run, in particular at Highbury.
Full Time: Fleetwood 1 Port Vale 0
If we keep it tight defensively we'll not lose too many games, if we can start getting it right consistently in the attacking third we'll win plenty.
Hopefully this win can inject a little more confidence and inspire us to another winning run.
