Cod Army Report: Fleetwood 1 Gillingham 0
1/11/14 - 3:00pm
You sign players permanently, or on loan, to make an impact and Tom Hitchcock really couldn't have made a better impact on his Fleetwood debut against Gillingham on Saturday.
The Milton Keynes Dons loanee struck within minutes to secure us the 1-0 win at Highbury.
Gillingham's goalkeeper Stephen Bywater was punished by a poor punch by Hitchcock who was in the right place at the right time to do what he was brought in on Friday to do, score goals and put us ahead with only 3 minutes played.
Stephen Dobbie gave Gareth Evans a chance to put us further ahead but his finish was poor and ended up going wide.
We've defended pretty well generally since stepping up into League 1 but sloppy defending, when we couldn't clear, almost resulted in Danny Kedwell's deflected effort going in beyond Chris Maxwell, but he got back to save.
Half Time: Fleetwood 1 Gillingham 0
Gillingham caused a few more problems in the second half but it was Hitchcock, with Dobbie again being the provider, that could have added another goal but he took one touch too many perhaps and also failed to test Bywater.
Bywater tried his best to present us with another goal but his latest mistake, dropping a Josh Morris effort at the feet of two waiting strikers, wasn't capitalised on by either Dobbie or Hitchcock as the pair looked to force the ball home.
Failure to take that chance, and the others, almost ended up costing us late on a Leon Legge fired wide from the edge of the area.
Full Time: Fleetwood 1 Gillingham 0
A wins a win, this wasn't really in much doubt at all but fortunate we took from the early change presented to us from the goalkeeper's mistake.
If we can end our poor away form, given how good our record is at Highbury, we've got a chance of achieving anything this season.
